Gerald Witter behandelt in seiner Dissertation an der Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Universität Greifswald die Untersuchung der körperlichen Leistungsfähigkeit der NVA-Unteroffiziersschülern. Diese wurden spiroergometrischen Untersuchungen, Achtertestuntersuchungen und Stufentestuntersuchungen unterzogen. Aus diesen Untersuchungen ging hervor, dass das Leistungsvermögen der Unteroffiziersschüler oft ungenügend war, sich aber im Laufe der viermonatigen militärischen Ausbildung verbesserte. Der Verfasser kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass insbesondere die standardisierte Stufentestvariante eine gute Aussagekraft besitzt und dem Truppenarzt als Methode zur Erfassung der physischen Leistungsfähigkeit empfohlen werden kann.
