Als Auftragswerk für die Musikfestspiele in Birmingham komponierte Dvořák 1890 ein Requiem. Auch wenn er seinem Werk den Text der katholischen Totenmesse zugrunde legt, ist es vom Umfang und der großen Besetzung (4 Solisten, Chor, großes romantisches Orchester) nicht für liturgische Zwecke bestimmt, sondern für die Aufführung im Konzertsaal. Virtuos setzt Dvořák die Mittel des Musikdramas ebenso wirkungsvoll ein wie meditative und lyrische Töne. Interpreten dieser Aufnahme sind neben einem hochkarätigen Solistenquartett (u.a. Bernarda Fink) das Collegium Vocale Gent und das Royal Flemish Philharmonic, die unter Stabführung von Philippe Herreweghe eine beeindruckende Interpretation dieses sich zwischen Andacht und Ekstase bewegenden Werks vorlegen.
