Das individuelle Schicksal des Helden berührt sich mit den politischen und militärischen Ereignissen seiner Zeit, wobei freilich (anders als in der Romanvorlage von Pasternak) die privaten Leidenschaften deutlich im Vordergrund stehen. David Leans äußerst publikumswirksame Inszenierung schwelgt in monumentalen Stimmungsbildern und beeindruckt durch ihren langen Atem in der Abfolge lyrischer und dramatischer Momente.
