Eine neue und preiswerte Reihe legt der Arena-Verlag vor: die bisherigen Bände (vgl. 3 weitere in dieser Nr.) zeichnen sich durch einen logischen linearen Aufbau, attraktive Illustrationen und ein insgesamt etwas ruhigeres - aber nicht unmodernes - Layout aus, wohltuend für die Augen, die sonst sehr häufig von Häppchen, Kästchen etc. geplagt sind. Im vorliegenden Band beginnen die Infos mit den ersten befestigten Dörfern, die sich über die Jahrhunderte hin zu Ringwällen, hölzernen und steinernen Festungen und Burgen entwickelten. Schwerpunkt ist Europa, darunter viele berühmte Beispiele mit strategischen Raffinessen (Engelsburg, Alhambra). Auch außereuropäische Bauwerke werden gezeigt (Chinesische Mauer, Golconda/Indien), sowie 1 moderne Festung (Fort Douaumont im 1. Weltkrieg) und Neuschwanstein als romantische Burg. Jedes Kapitel endet mit einer Zusammenfassung, Links, Buchtipps und Berufen, die in den geschilderten Bereichen arbeiten. Abschließend Glossar und ausführliches Stichwortverzeichnis. Am ehesten mit S. Biesty (BA 11/04) zu vergleichen.
