Though at first sight the dazzling paintings of the Op Artist Bridget Riley seem uncompromisingly abstract, this film brings out the clear relationship they have to landscape. The artist's early paintings are landscapes executed in a divisionist style relating to Seurat and Van Gogh. The perception of light in the landscape is her major preoccupation, and an early experience she describes of being engulfed in sunlight is important for her development. Throughout this film, sequences of hills, grasses and running water are alternated with those of the pictures, subtly bringing out the fact that the rhythms and resonances in her works are in tune with the natural environment.
