This film was made at a workshop for Shaffy Theater Amsterdam. The Unanswered Question is based on a piece by the same name composed by Charles Ives in 1907 and a letter from a senile old lady in Raster, a literary journal. Despite its modest length of eighteen minutes, The Unanswered Question is a didactic poem on the mechanics (or perphaps the organics) of memory and thus of the cinema. Memory and its sometimes liberating and sometimes confining accomplice oblivion are examined with primary cinematic instruments. The examination itself and its exploratory results shape the various lines in the film. (Idéale Audience)
