Van der Keuken besuchte verschiedene Völker in allen Erdteilen und untersuchte Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten der Musik, die dort heute mit Instrumenten gespielt wird, die einst von den Eroberern und Kolonisatoren eingeführt wurden.
