Kurz nach Hitlers Machtübernahme 1933 wurden jüdische Filmschaffende gezwungen, Deutschland zu verlassen. Eine Gruppe von Emigrantinnen und Emigranten konnte sich in Wien und Budapest in einer vom reichsdeutschen Markt unabhängigen, deutschsprachigen Filmproduktion betätigen. Unerwünschtes Kino basiert auf Ausschnitten aus Spielfilmen, Wochenschauen und home-movies, u.a. des Filmregisseurs Hermann Kosterlitz, der als Henry Koster drei Jahrzehnte zu den führenden Regisseuren Hollywoods zählte. Seine 8mm-Filme wurden von der Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences erst kürzlich restauriert und sind in dem Dokumentarfilm erstmals zu sehen. Porträtiert werden neben Kosterlitz auch Felix Joachimson (Jackson), Joe Pasternak, Otto Wallburg, Hans Jaray, Franziska Gaal, Rosy Barsony, Hortense Raky, Oskar Pilzer, Zoltan Vidor und Ernst Verebes.In Gesprächen mit Zeitzeugen und den Nachfahren der Filmemigranten werden die Schicksale der Hauptakteure und die Bedingungen der Filmproduktion in den 30er Jahren geschildert.
