Content: Lars Norén is Sweden's best-known contemporary playwright. One day he received a call from one of Sweden's high security prisons, Tidaholm. Three inmates had been granted permission by the National Prison Administration to put on a play as part of their rehabilitation programme. All three had been convicted of serious offences, and two were self-confessed neo-nazis. They wanted Norén to write a play for them, a challenge he readily accepted. During the course of a year, he visited the inmates at the institution, interviewed them and finally scripted a play based on their everyday reality. The three inmates were to play themselves and have a major input into their own lines. When Michal Leszczylowski got to hear of the project, he took cinematographer Gunnar Källström with him and followed the painstaking work of Norén with the inmates for six months. The result is a terse, closely-observed film that switches between rehearsals and the play's first performance. The play subsequently went on tour around Sweden. When Leszczylowski was putting the finishing touches to his film, some shocking news reached him. The day after the final performance of the tour, one of the inmates, Tony Olsson, had escaped. Together with some neo-nazi accomplices, he took part in a bank robbery that ended up with the cold-blooded murder of two policemen... The tragic outcome of the story caused the film crew to abandon their work. "For quite some time I thought of giving up the film completely. But then I felt compelled to finish it. You need to tackle sensitive and disturbing issues, even though it can be pretty tough." NOW, MORE THAN FIVE YEARS on from the murders, the time is right to release the film. It will not, however, be shown on television. "It's a challenging work that demands a thinking audience. It's not suitable for television, where it would simply sink to the bottom alongside the likes of Big Brother and other "reality" programmes. In any case, the two other inmates have now been released and are trying to rebuild their lives as best they can. Showing the film on television would put them at too much risk."
