Content: ... BBC2's Peaky Blinders leaps forward a century to 1919 and into a riveting blend of family and gangster epics. Instead of the usual toffs and twits that Christie-esque murder mystery shows have populated the period with in the imaginations of modern audiences, we meet realistic men and women living with the physical and emotional scars of the Great War in Birmingham, a city shaped by the Industrial Revolution... Creator and writer Steven Knight, freed from comedy writing by creating Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, has become something of a champion of worthy causes and social groups traditionally ignored by mainstream television and film. This series, inspired by his own family roots, brings to vivid life a moment in history, a place and time and the people living through it. The choices they make, the reasons why, the consequences, these are the very essence of good drama, and Peaky Blinders is brimming with great drama. Everything about the show - writing, acting, production design, direction, soundtrack N shows talented folk working at their peak, delivering their best. This is not, however, prestige television by rote - this is a full-blooded gangster epic, a family drama wrapped up in a thriller plot, a very British tale of war vets, street crime, anti-Imperial terrorism, and how compassion and cruelty often walk hand in hand through the city streets of so-called civilised nations.
