Der New Yorker Literaturagent Peter Katz erhält ein Manuskript des Autors Richard Flynn. Dieses beschreibt die Umstände der Ermordung des berühmten Professors Joseph Wieder vor über einem Vierteljahrhundert. Da die Tat aber nie aufgeklärt wurde und Flynn in der Zwischenzeit verstorben ist, beginnt Katz zu recherchieren. Er erfährt, dass Wieder angeblich ein Verhältnis mit der Studentin Laura Baines hatte, in die aber Flynn verliebt war, der wiederum die Aufgabe hatte, Wieders Bibliothek zu ordnen. Tatverdächtig war auch der Handwerker Derek Simmons, der die Leiche fand. Im 2. Teil erfährt der Autor John Keller von dem Richard-Flynn-Manuskript und vermutet bald, dass Laura Baines damals eine Arbeit Wieders gestohlen hatte, während im 3. Teil der Ex-Detective Roy Freeman besessen davon bleibt, den 26 Jahre alten Fall zu lösen, nachdem ein Mehrfachmörder die Tat gestanden hat. Am Ende geht es weniger um die Frage, wer den Professor ermordete, sondern vielmehr warum - und wie verlässlich unsere Erinnerungen sind. Ein intelligentes, spannendes Verwirrspiel.
