Populäre Musik markiert einen gesellschaftlichen Bereich, in dem Fragen der Konstruktion und Repräsentation geschlechtlicher Identität diskursiv und mitunter kontrovers ausgehandelt werden. Dabei lässt sich populäre Musik sowohl als Spiegelbild gesellschaftlicher Verhältnisse begreifen als auch als Experimentierfeld, in dem gängige Vorstellungen davon, was „männlich“ und „weiblich“ ist bzw. sein soll, hinterfragt werden. Vor diesem Hintergrund geht der Band der Frage nach, mit welchen Mitteln es Musikerinnen im Fortlauf der Zeit gelang, dem männlich dominierten Mainstream eine selbstbewusste Darstellung von Weiblichkeit entgegenzusetzen. Zu berücksichtigen ist hierbei, dass den Musikerinnen die Räume, sich selbstbewusst und selbstbestimmt zu präsentieren, nicht ohne weiteres zugestanden wurden - sie mussten vielmehr erkämpft werden. Die Star-Karrieren von Musikerinnen lassen sich nicht nur als Geschichten sich ausformender Images und Performance-Stile lesen, sondern auch - und insbesondere - als Geschichten der Selbstermächtigung und Selbstbehauptung.
