"Nel villaggio tedesco di Bacherach, in una sera imprecisata del Medioevo, si celebra il rituale della Pasqua ebraica. Due stranieri, avvolti in ampi mantelli, si uniscono, inattesi, alla piccola comunità. E da quel momento nulla sarà più come prima. Come scrive Magris nella sua nota al testo: «Il Rabbi di Bacherach è, insieme ad altri grandi testi, una delle espressioni più intense della simbiosi spirituale ebraico-tedesca da cui nasce l'ispirazione di Heine e verso la quale essa stessa si protende, ed è anche l'espressione tragica della scissione che frantuma quella simbiosi e dalla quale, a sua volta, nasce una grande, dolorosa poesia aperta all'universale-umano»."

Biographisches: "Heinrich Heine (1797-1856), scrittore e poeta tedesco di famiglia ebraica, studia diritto, filosofia e letteratura. Segue le lezioni di Schlegel a Bonn e a Berlino frequenta Hegel, Schleiermacher e Chamisso. Convertitosi alla religione evangelica, si laurea in Giurisprudenza a Gottinga. La critica sempre più radicale alla società tedesca lo porta a trasferirsi in Francia, dove conosce Balzac, Hugo, de Musset e Sand. Tra le sue opere recentemente pubblicate in Italia: Gli dèi in esilio (Adelphi 2000), Il viaggio nello Harz (Marsilio 2001), Poesie scelte (Mimesis 2016)."
