Abstract: Die Prävalenzrate von Einsamkeit, das heißt der Anteil einsamer Menschen in der Bevölkerung zwischen 45 und 84 Jahren, schwankt zwischen 2008 und 2017 ungefähr zwischen acht und neun Prozent. Die Einsamkeitsraten nehmen keineswegs beständig mit dem Alter zu. Im Jahr 2008 lag die Prävalenz im frühen mittleren Erwachsenenalter (45-54 Jahre) auf etwa dem gleichen Niveau wie im höheren Alter (75-84 Jahre). Die Entwicklung der Anzahl einsamer Menschen wird auch durch den Wandel der Altersstruktur der Bevölkerung beeinflusst. Das Älterwerden der geburtenstarken Jahrgänge bewirkt, dass die Bevölkerungsgruppe der 45-84 Jährigen insgesamt wächst und damit auch die Anzahl von Menschen in dieser Altersgruppe, die an Einsamkeit leiden. Bei den 75- bis 84-Jährigen zeigt sich so trotz eines Rückgangs der Prävalenzraten eine Zunahme der Anzahl einsamer Menschen zwischen 2008 und 2017
