Der nach einem Roman von de Sade entwickelte Stoff ist zwar im Jahr 1944 angesiedelt, dient jedoch als Kommentar zur hedonistischen Konsumgesellschaft der Nachkriegszeit, die von Pasolini als apokalyptische Verfallsepoche begriffen wird ohne Hoffnung auf Veränderung.
