When Ted arrives in the isolated town, he partners with PI Amanda Pharrell, herself a convicted murderer, to solve the disappearance of author Jake Scully. Morton varies his delivery enough to differentiate between characters while staying firmly in character as Ted, a choice that works well with the story's first-person narrative. His excellent pacing and gripping delivery maintain tension even when the plot occasionally sags under the weight of its multiple storylines.
