Biographisches: "James Joyce wurde am 2. Februar 1882 in Dublin als erstes von zehn Kindern geboren. Seine Schulzeit verbrachte er an einem Internat und einem College des Jesuitenordens. 1898 nahm er das Studium moderner Sprachen (Englisch, Französisch, Italienisch) am University College in Dublin auf. 1902 bis 1903 versuchte er in Paris, Medizin zu studieren, kehrte jedoch beim Tod der Mutter nach Dublin zurück. Am 16. Juni 1904, den er später als „Bloomsday im Ulysses verewigte, führte Joyce seine spätere Lebensgefährtin Nora Barnacle zum ersten Mal aus. Das Paar verließ Irland und versuchte in Zürich, dann in Pula Fuß zu fassen. Ab 1905 arbeitete Joyce als Englischlehrer in Triest wo sein Sohn Giorgio und zwei Jahre später seine Tochter Lucia zur Welt kam. Da Joyce als britischem Staatsbürger während des Ersten Weltkriegs die Verhaftung drohte, floh er 1915 nach Zürich, 1920 zog er nach Paris. An seinem 40. Geburtstag beendete Joyce die Arbeit am Ulysses, der am 22. Februar 1922 bei Shakespeare & Company erschien. 1931 heirateten Joyce und Nora Barnacle. Vor der anrückenden Wehrmacht flohen sie 1940 zurück nach Zürich, wo Joyce am 13. Januar 1941 starb. Seine Romane und Erzählungen, u.a. Stephen Hero (später veröffentlicht unter dem Titel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man), Dubliners, Ulysses und Finnegans Wake sind wegweisende Werke der Weltliteratur und begründeten die literarische Moderne in Europa."
