Biographisches: "John Ronald Reuel Tolkien wurde am 3. Januar 1892 in Bloemfontein in Südafrika geboren. Sein Vater starb, als er vier Jahre jung war, und so musste seine Mutter ihn und seinen jüngeren Bruder in bescheidenen Verhältnissen in England aufziehen. Früh zeigte sich seine Liebe zu Sprachen. Er erhielt ein Stipendium für das Exeter College in Oxford, wo er 1913 seinen B.A. mit Bravour bestand. In dieser Zeit lernte er Edith Bratt kennen, seine Luthien, die er am 22. März 1916 heiratete. Das Ehepaar Tolkien hatte vier Kinder: 1917 wurde John geboren, 1920 kam Michael zur Welt. Der Herausgeber der kritischen Werkausgabe seines Vaters, Christopher, wurde 1924 und Nesthäkchen Priscilla 1929 geboren. Tolkiens akademische Laufbahn wurde vom ersten Weltkrieg unterbrochen. Er verlor im Laufe der Schlacht an der Somme binnen eines Tages fast alle seine Freunde. Diese Erfahrung prägte ihn für den Rest seines Lebens. 1919 legte er den M.A. ab, zwei Jahre später wurde er Professor für Englisch an der Universität Leeds, und weitere vier Jahre später wurde ihm der Ruf als Rawlingson Professor für Angelsächsisch ans Pembroke College erteilt. Seine letzte Professur erhälte er als Merton Professor für englische Sprache und Literatur 1945 in Oxford. Tolkien ging 1959 in Ruhestand und war überrascht, welchen Erfolg seine Neuschöpfung einer mythischen Welt hat, die im Silmarillion, dem Herrn der Ringe und dem Hobbit Ausdruck findet. Gerade in den Vereinigten Staaten wurde der Brite in den 60ern zum Kultautor. 1971 starb Tolkiens Ehefrau Edith. Für seine herausragende literarische Bedeutung wurde Tolkien 1972 von der Queen geadelt. Am Morgen des 2. September 1973 starb der Schöpfer von Mittelerde in einem Krankenhaus in Bournemouth."
