Als "Queen of Crime" wird Agatha Christie, 1890 bis 1976, allein schon wegen ihres gigantischen Publikumserfolges bezeichnet: Die geschätzte Gesamtauflage ihres Werkes beläuft sich auf über zwei Milliarden. Neben Theaterstücken und "gewöhnlichen Romanen", die unter dem Pseudonym Mary Westmacott erschienen, hat Christie im Laufe eines halben Jahrhunderts etwa achtzig Kriminalromane und dreißig Bände mit Kurzgeschichten publiziert. In den 50er Jahren begann sie, ihre Krimistorys für das Theater zu adaptieren. Ihr bekanntestes Kriminaldrama "The Mousetrap" wird noch heute, nach über 60-jähriger Laufzeit, im St. Martin's Theatre im Londoner West End gespielt. 1971 wurde Agatha Christie eine der höchsten Auszeichnungen Großbritanniens verliehen - der Titel "Dame Commander of the British Empire".
