Zwei Brüder kämpfen zwischen 1916 und 1921 gemeinsam im irischen Untergrund gegen die britischen Unterdrücker. Nach dem Waffenstillstand von 1921, als der Konflikt zum Bürgerkrieg unter dessen Befürwortern und Gegnern ausartet, stehen sie sich als Feinde gegenüber. Ken Loach differenziert das zunächst aufgebaute Gut-Böse-Paradigma und entwirft ein zunehmend komplexes Geschichtsbild. Dabei verpasst er die Chance, Gewalt als Mittel von Politik deutlich genug in Frage zu stellen, sodass sich der aufwändig inszenierte Film auch als blut-romantische Heldenverehrung lesen lässt. - Ab 16.
