Im 16. Jahrhundert: Rabbi Loew, geistlicher Führer der jüdischen Gemeinschaft in Prag, ein Magier und Meister der schwarzen Kunst, haucht einer Lehmstatue Leben ein. Der Koloss rettet dem Kaiser das Leben, worauf dieser ein Dekret widerruft, das die Vertreibung der Juden aus Prag verordnet. Als sich der Golem infolge einer verhängnisvollen Konstellation der Gestirne gegen seinen Schöpfer auflehnt, bricht ein kleines Mädchen seine Lebenskraft. Wegeners Film war einer der künstlerisch wie geschäftlich größten Erfolge der deutschen Stummfilmproduktion, dessen außergewöhnliche, von Jugendstil und Expressionismus bestimmte Bild- und Dekorgestaltung bis heute nichts von ihrer suggestiven Wirkung eingebüßt hat. Die vom Münchner Filmmuseum aufwändig restaurierte und vollständig viragierte Fassung erlebte 2002, mit neuer Musik von Aljoscha Zimmermann, bei arte ihre Weltpremiere. - Sehenswert ab 12.
