Im Zentrum des zweiten Bandes der Reihe "Handbuch der Deutschen Geschichte" steht das Karolingerreich, jedoch mit einem Schwerpunkt auf dem in den Reichsteilungen fixierten Ostfrankenreich (714/715 bis 887/888). Die karolingischen Herrscher des achten Jahrhunderts, von Karl Martell bis zu Karl dem Großen, haben diejenigen Völker und Räume ihrer Herrschaft unterworfen, die im zehnten Jahrhundert eine gemeinsame deutsche Geschichte begannen, nachdem das Karolingerreich zerfallen war. Das Buch zeichnet zunächst die Integration in den großfränkischen Reichsverband, dann dessen fortschreitende Desintegration nach und liefert insofern eine historische Grundlegung der deutschen Geschichte. Der Inhalt ist in folgende Abschnitte gegliedert: A) Der erneute Angriff der fränkischen Reichsgewalt nach Osten im achten Jahrhundert; B) Das Frankenreich unter Karl dem Großen und Ludwig dem Frommen; C) Der Zerfall des Karolingerreiches im neunten Jahrhundert.
