Im Dreißigjährigen Krieg vermischten sich die Konflikte um die Machtansprüche protestantischer und katholischer Herrscher in Deutschland sowie gesamt europäische Interessen zu einem lang anhaltenden, mit großer Brutalität auf allen Seiten geführter Bürgerkrieg. Neben den deutschen Konfliktparteien beteiligten sich auch Schweden, Frankreich und Österreich (Habsburg), um die eigene Macht zu bewahren. Der Dreißigjährige Krieg führte auch zu einer neuen Form militärischer Auseinandersetzungen: Es waren nicht mehr ausschließlich die Soldaten der beteiligten Streitkräfte von den Kämpfen betroffen, sondern auch die Zivilbevölkerung. Sie wurde nicht nur Opfer in den Kämpfen selber, sondern erlitt auch Gewalttaten durch marodierende Söldner. Hierfür gilt insbesondere die Stadt Magdeburg als Beispiel; das "Magdeburgisieren" wurde Sinnbild für eine plündernde, brandschatzende und vergewaltigende Soldateska und der Zerstörung der gesamten Infrastruktur einer Stadt.
