Das kleine Land Schweiz gehört keinem Militärbündnis an und trägt den Neutralitätsstatus. Seit der Schlacht bei Marignano 1515 versucht sich die Schweiz, aus kriegerischen Auseinandersetzungen fernzuhalten. Während des Wiener Kongresses 1815 wurde die Neutralität der Eidgenossenschaft offiziell anerkannt und gilt bis heute. Die Frage stellte sich in der Geschichte und stellt sich auch heute noch, ob sich die Schweiz aus eigener Kraft verteidigen kann, wenn es zu einem Angriff kommen würde. Der Autor stellt auch die provokative Frage, ob die Neutralität der Schweiz lediglich ein Mythos ist, gerade während des Zweiten Weltkriegs und in der Zeit des Kalten Krieges.
