Welche sozialen, politischen und kulturellen Entwicklungen haben auf deutscher Seite den Zweiten Weltkrieg fast sechs Jahre lang ermöglicht und begleitet? Wie wirkten die militärischen Ereignisse auf die Menschen im Deutschen Reich zurück? Diese und weitere Fragen richten im vorliegenden Doppelband den Blick auf diejenigen, die den Krieg geführt und unter seinen Folgen gelitten haben. Mit modernen Methoden der Sozialgeschichte, Mentalitätsgeschichte sowie Kulturgeschichte werden die vielfältigen Aspekte dieser "Kriegsgesellschaft" untersucht, die nicht nur einen Krieg nach außen, sondern auch nach innen gegen ihre vermeintlichen "Feinde" führte. Den mehr als zwanzig Autoren geht es unter anderem um den Zusammenhang von Krieg und Holocaust, um Zwangsarbeit in Industrie und Landwirtschaft, um den Arbeitseinsatz von KZ-Häftlingen in den Kommunen sowie um den Alltag im Bombenkrieg wie auch um die Rolle der NSDAP, die Bedeutung des deutschen Nationalismus, der Propaganda und der Medien für die Mobilisierung der Bevölkerung. Als Teil der Gesellschaft gerät auch die Wehrmacht, ihr Sozialprofil, ihre Ideologisierung und der militärische Widerstand, ins Blickfeld. (MOD)
