Aus verschiedenen Perspektiven wird untersucht, wie sich der Erste Weltkrieg auf die Umwelt im Sinne von ökologischen Auswirkungen niederschlug. Dabei werden alle Kontinente betrachtet. Es geht darum, wie Truppen in Kampfzonen versorgt werden konnten mit Lebensmitteln und Energie für die Maschinen. Der Einsatz von chemischen Kampfstoffen vernichtete nicht nur Menschen, sondern hinterließ ebenso verheerende Spuren in der Natur. Der Erste Weltkrieg steht auch in direktem Zusammenhang mit der Überfischung der Nordsee. Hungersnöte durch Kriegseinflüsse waren häufig der Grund für Migrationsbewegungen. Letztendlich wird der Frage, wie sich militärische Konflikte auf die Umwelt auswirkten, erst seit kurzem Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt.
