Der Fotojournalismus während des Vietnamkriegs gilt als besonders unmittelbar und kritisch. Die bildwissenschaftliche Studie analysiert anhand von Fotoessays von Larry Burrows die US-amerikanische Darstellung des Krieges im Life-Magazin und deren spätere Rezeption im historischen, medienwissenschaftlichen und kunst- wie fotografiehistorischen Kontext. Hierbei werden Kriterien und Bildmuster der Authentizität herausgearbeitet und überprüft. Die Studien zeigen ein wandelndes Kriegsbild, das noch stark in kolonialen Bildmustern verhaftet ist. Fotografieren im Stil der combat photography, später im embedded journalism zum Prinzip gemacht, kann bereits für den Vietnamkrieg als Form der Propaganda aufgezeigt werden
