The Roman de Tristan et Iseult published in 1900 by Joseph Bédier (1864-1938) is much more than one of the many modern rewritings of medieval literature. Written by one of the most famous medievalists of the 20th century and functioning as a secret mirror of his entire work, its stylistic perfection contributed to the rehabilitation of literary topics from the Middle Ages. Without Bédier, Denis de Rougemont would never have written his L'Amour et l'Occident and many scholars would have missed his inspirational call for a medieval vocation. Bédier's Roman gave way to at least forty translations and many more free adaptations illustrated by several artists. Constantly re-edited, it amply deserved a new critical edition aimed at refreshing a text which knew close to 600 successive editions. It also aims at explicating the genesis, the meaning and the diffusion of a novel which, independently from its links with medieval literature, can be counted as a masterpiece from 20th century French literature.
