Este texto analiza desde una perspectiva comparativa diferentes conceptos de ‘tiempo’ presentes en la época colonial en lo que hoy son Brasil y Bolivia, así como sus funciones en escenas y presentaciones visuales en el arte religioso. Por lo tanto contribuye a responder algunas de las preguntas más importantes acerca de las funciones y estructuras de los diferentes sistemas de representativos. Se analizan las posibles razones de la adaptación de las tradiciones medievales europeas, y de la manifestación de ciertos tipos de periodización en la producción material y semántica en estas zonas de contacto coloniales. En ambos casos, ciertos anacronismos medievales sirvieron como modos de convertir las diferencias culturales a expresiones inteligibles y comprensibles para todos los actores históricos.

The text analyzes in a comparative approach different time concepts in parts of colonial Latin America (today Brazil and Bolivia) and their functions in visual stagings and displays in religious art. It contributes to the important ongoing discussion of functions and structures of different representational systems. It explores possible reasons for the adaptation of European medieval traditions, and the inscription of certain kinds of periodization in the material and semantic productions of these colonial contact zones. In the Bolivian as well as in the Brazilian case, medieval anachronisms served as modes for making cultural differences intelligible and comprehensible for all historical actors.
