As is well known in trade theory, although under certain conditions in higher-dimensional modelsstandard equilibrium solutions can be generated, the direction of trade remains determined, because the specific causal relation between goods prices and factor prices cannot be fixed. In recentempirical tests e.g. of the Heckscher-Ohlin-Vanek theorem this is reflected in the considerable indeterminacy of the distribution of production across regions and nations. Almost five decades ago, Samuelson put forward the idea that trade becomes determinate if impediments to trade like exogenous transport costs are present. This paper proceeds with a generalization: The direction of trade can only be explained completely if exogenous non-economic determinants are taken into consideration. These determinants can be conceived as absolute advantages in the context of trade theories. Therefore, investigating real economic integration has + to be an interdisciplinary endeavour.
