A central property of emotions, apart from their quality, is their intensity. To account for emotion intensity, theories of emotion should ideally be quantitative theories, i.e. theories that relate emotions to their causes and consequences by quantitative laws. So far, however, there are only few such theories. One reason for this state of affairs could be that quantitative emotion theories are difficult to test because they presuppose that emotion intensity is measured with high precision, and on a metric scale level. The most commonly used method for the measurement of the intensity (and quality) of emotions consists of self-reports in the form of direct intensity ratings (e.g., "How disappointed do you feel?" on a scale from 0 = "not at all disappointed" to 10 = "extremely disappointed"). However, it is questionable whether ratings are suitable for the testing of quantitative emotion theories (at least on the individual level), as they contain considerable error variance and their scale level is possibly only ordinal. In psychophysics, indirect scaling methods have long been used as an alternative to ratings and other direct scaling methods for the measurement of the intensity of mental states (typically, sensations). In contrast to direct scaling methods, that require participants to make absolute judgments of intensity, indirect scaling methods ask for relative judgments.
