This book is intended for the first year students of archaeology and its objective is to prepare them for further studies. It contains basic terminology, chapters on history of archaeology, and principles of the periodization of prehistory and early history. It introduces some leading figures of the discipline, both past and present. The second part conveys basic methodology of the field illustrated by a number of examples. The book further defines individual elements of two basic categories of archaeological terms, the horizontal-geographic category (civilization - circle - archaeological culture - group - type) and the vertical-chronological category (period - phase - subphase - horizon). Then, it lists methods involved in the determination of the ethnicity of prehistoric cultures, methods of absolute and relative chronology, methods employed in the study of the spiritual life of people in prehistory and the early Middle Ages, and methods applied in the study of economy and the related socio-economic systems of the individual phases of prehistory and early history. The last chapter discusses the outcomes of archaeological research and professional ethics. The book also features an extensive glossary of specialist terms
