After assessing China's stake in multilateralism and discussing recent interest among Asia-Pacific states in a multilateral security dialogue, the authors explore the post-Cold War Asian security environment, prospects for multilateral security co-operation in the Asia-Pacific region, how the majority of Chinese analysts and officials view multilateralism and the Asia-Pacific role of the USA, risks and opportunities for China from the creation of some sort of multilateral security structure the Asia-Pacific area and the need for greater military transparency in this region.
