Das Monschauer Land kam erst im Spätmittelalter 1435 als Amt an das Herzogtum Jülich. Als Gebietseinheit war es aus einem karolingischen Forstbezirk in der Nordeifel mit Sitz in Konzen (heute Stadtteil von Monschau) hervorgegangen. Die aus diesem Umkreis in diesem Band versammelten ländlichen Rechtsquellen vom 13. bis zum 18. Jahrhundert spiegeln im Vergleich mit den Ackerbaugebieten des Niederrheins eine stärker geschlossene territoriale Entwicklung auf der Grundlage des Forst- und Roderechts. Gesonderte Rechtsbezirke von Adelsherrschaften fehlen weitgehend. Die Quellentexte machen eine Rekonstruktion der Rodungs- und Siedlungsräume möglich, die sich im umgebenden Wald bis heute abzeichnen.
