Shlomo Birnbaum, geboren 1927, wächst in einem jüdisch-orthodoxen Haus im polnischen Tschenstochau auf. Nach dem Einmarsch der Nazis im September 1939 muss die Familie ins Ghetto. Der Alltag ist bestimmt von Angst und Tod, noch heute sagt Birnbaum: "Ich habe erlebt, wie meine Mutter in den Tod geschickt wurde, wie meine Brüder und Schwestern umgebracht wurden. Ich konnte nicht mehr glauben. Wo war Gott?" Zusammen mit seinem Vater Arie, der ihn immer wieder rettet, überlebt Shlomo, muss aber nach seiner "Befreiung" Sklavenarbeit in einer Rüstungsfabrik leisten und wird nach dem Krieg erneut mit mörderischem Judenhass konfrontiert - diesmal von Seiten der Polen. Shlomo und sein Vater fliehen schließlich in das Land, in das sie nie hatten einen Fuß setzen wollen: nach Deutschland. Birnbaums Geschichte, aufgeschrieben von Rafael Seligmann, ist das Dokument eines sehr persönlichen Ringens mit dem Glauben, über besondere Vater-Sohn-Bande, die sich über Generationen spannen, und das ergreifende Zeugnis seines Kampfes ums Überleben und Weiterleben im Land der Feinde
