Sheherazade is based on the first story of The Thousand and One Nights and danced to music by Rimsky-Korsakov. When it was first staged, with Nijinsky in the role of the Golden Slave, Mikhail Fokine’s choreography of the exotic and passionate tale was a huge success. The ballet’s triumph was also due to the fabulous set and costume designs of Léon Bakst. This Kirov staging recreates Bakst’s designs. Svetlana Zakharova dances the title role, with Farukh Ruzimatov as the slave lover she risks all for. This live recording was made at the Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris
