Boubou ist eine französische Verballhornung des Wolof-Wortes "mbubb", ein in ganz Westafrika überwiegend von Männern getragenes, weit ausladendes Gewand mit langen Ärmeln. Ein Boubou besteht aus 9 bis 12 Metern Damast, der mit Stickerei oder mit Indigoreserven dekoriert ist. Heute ist der Boubou überwiegend Festtagsgewand, nur in der islamischen Republik Mauretanien gehört er noch zum Alltag. In der vorliegenden Publikation sind vor allem historische Gewandformen und Sticktraditionen zusammengetragen, und fast alle Gewänder werden hier erstmals publiziert mit einem Überblick über die Schnittformen in ganz Westafrika samt ihrer Herkunft und kulturhistorischer Einordnung. Es wird gezeigt, dass die Formensprache der gestickten Motive eng mit dem Islam verbunden ist, dass die geometrischen Muster mit magischem muslimischem Wissen zu tun haben.
