Das Märchen von Aschenputtel bzw. Aschenbrödel ist in vielen europäischen Ländern verbreitet. Verschieden in Handlung und auftretenden Personen, bekommt Aschenputtel schließlich überall ihren Prinzen. Rossinis Librettist, Jacopo Ferreti, konnte sich auf verschiedene Text- und Opernfassungen stützen und auch Rossini griff - wie auch schon in seiner ähnlich angelegten Opera buffa "Der Barbier von Sevilla" - nicht nur in der Ouvertüre auf eigene Kompositionen zurück. Hatte R. Herfurtner seine Erzählung zu Prokofjews Ballett "Romeo und Julia" in eine Rahmenhandlung aus unserer Zeit eingebettet, so führt seine Nacherzählung hier gleich in das Haus des Theaterdirektors vom Teatro Valle in Rom, der Rossini und Ferreti sehnlichst erwartet. Als ihnen einfach kein guter Opernstoff einfallen will, verhilft ihnen das kleine Aschenmädchen Luisa mit ihrem Lied vom Aschenputtel, italienisch Cenerentola, zum Geistesblitz. "Angelina", so der ursprüngliche Titel, ist in Rekordzeit fertig. Stimmiger Text, traumhafte Bilder, begleitet von gut abgestimmten Ausschnitten virtuoser Gesangskunst auf CD.
