Mit der Friedlichen Revolution in der DDR und der staatlichen Wiedervereinigung 1989/90 begann ein neues Kapitel in der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Sinnfälliger Ausdruck dessen war der Beschluss des Deutschen Bundestags 1991, den Großteil der Parlaments- und Regierungsfunktionen von Bonn nach Berlin zu verlagern. Im Zuge der sogenannten Hauptstadtdebatte gewann der Begriff der »Berliner Republik« an Kontur. Anfangs noch Folie für Warnungen, die Tugenden der »alten« Bundesrepublik nicht aus den Augen zu verlieren, ist er inzwischen von der zeithistorischen Forschung übernommen worden. Die Beiträge des Bandes ziehen eine vorläufige Bilanz über die Entwicklung der Berliner Republik. Namhafte Historiker und Politikwissenschaftler gehen den innen- und außenpolitischen Veränderungen für Deutschland seit 1990 nach. Auch werden die neuen sozialen, finanziellen und wirtschaftlichen Herausforderungen skizziert, mit denen sich die Bundesrepublik konfrontiert sieht. Darüber hinaus stellt sich die Frage nach den Kontinuitäten aus der »Bonner Republik«
