Der reich illustrierte und genau recherchierte Band beruht auf einer Ausstellung 2013 im Frauenmuseum Hittisau in Vorarlberg und widmet sich Muskelfrauen, Dompteusen, Kunstreiterinnen, Trapezkünstlerinnen, Zirkusdirektorinnen und "Freaks" wie der ohne Beine geborenen "Halflady" Antonia Matt. Den Autorinnen gelingt es auf sozialgeschichtlich anschauliche Weise, repräsentative weibliche Zirkuskarrieren des 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhunderts zu vermitteln. Ihr Spektrum reicht von der US-Kunstschützin Annie Oakley (Vorbild für die Titelfigur des Musicals "Annie Get Your Gun") und Zazel, der menschlichen Kanonenkugel, über die erste tätowierte Schaustellerin Nora Hildebrandt bis zur notgedrungen noch mit 75 Jahren auftretenden französischen Seiltänzerin Madame Saqui. Nicht nur in deren Fall werden die Schattenseiten dieser ungewöhnlichen Laufbahnen nicht verschwiegen. Vom Thema her erscheint das Buch eigentlich als zu speziell, um es "breit" zu empfehlen, ist aber genau die Art sympathischer Veröffentlichung, die sich eine ambitionierte Bibliothek nicht nur für ihre Leserinnen leisten können müsste.
