Als Nachfahrin der bekannten jüdisch-spanischen Familie Abarbanell engagierte sich Jeannette Schwerin (1852-1899) in verschiedenen Organisationen der deutschen Frauenbewegung. Sie war Lehrerin von Alice Salomon und massgeblich beteiligt u.a. an der Gründung der Deutschen Gesellschaft für ethische Kultur, der Mädchen- und Frauengruppen für soziale Hilfsarbeit sowie der Errichtung der ersten öffentlichen Lesehalle in Berlin. Als vielseitig gebildete Persönlichkeit gab sie in der kurzen Zeit ihres öffentlichen Wirkens wichtige Anstöe︢ zur Sozialreform und Emanzipation, z.B. zu einer qualifizierten Ausbildung und gleichrangigen Beschäftigung der Frauen in der Wohlfahrtspflege sowie zu einem verbesserten Arbeitsschutz für Frauen. Dank ihrer anregenden Vorträge und Publikationen gewann sie auch im Ausland ein so hohes Ansehen, dass sie kurz vor ihrem viel zu frühen Tod als erste Deutsche in den Vorstand des "International Council of Women" gewählt wurde.
