Staatlicher Unterdrückung waren beide christlichen Kirchen in Weißrußland in vergangenen Jahrzehnten ausgesetzt. Mit besonderer Härte verfolgte die kommunistische Staatsmacht jedoch die katholische Kirche, weil sie als Ausdruck des Polentums galt. Jetzt, nachdem sie ihre Freiheit wiedererlangt hat, stützt sich die katholische Kirche vor allem auf etwa eine halbe Million Polen. Die orthodoxe Kirche in Weißrußland zählt inzwischen zwar wieder mehr als 700 Gemeinden, sie fühlt sich aber gegenüber den Katholiken in der Defensive. Bei allen Gegensätzen zwischen den christlichen Kirchen ist jedoch beider Wille nicht zu verkennen, gemeinsam die Menschen für den christlichen Glauben wiederzugewinnen. (BIOst-Wpt)
