Dieser Sammlungskatalog der Kunstbibliothek präsentiert vor allem die Ausstellung in der Kunstbibliothek, die eines der innovativsten Kapitel der neueren Fotografiegeschichte beleuchtet. Gezeigt werden rund Aufnahmen von 18 namhaften Fotokünstlern, darunter Max Burchartz, Florence Henri, László Moholy-Nagy und Albert Renger-Patzsch. Ihre Bilder begeisterten in kurzer Zeit eine breite Öffentlichkeit. Sie verbanden zeitgemäße Modernität mit einer Bildästhetik, die unter den Schlagworten "Neues Sehen" bzw. "Neue Sachlichkeit" verbreitet wurde. Die Exponate gehen zurück auf Erwerbungen, die die Kunstbibliothek unter der Leitung von Curt Glaser, von 1924 und 1933 Direktor der Kunstbibliothek, zwischen 1929 und 1932 tätigte. Sie entstammen verschiedenen Ausstellungen, allen voran der Werkbundschau "Film und Foto", die als die bedeutendste internationale Zusammenfassung des avantgardistischen Film- und Fotoschaffens der 1920er Jahre gilt.
