Content: "The aim of this book is to provide psychologists with a convenient and comprehensive guide to the field of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), its domains and primary modalities, the ethics of integrating CAM into psychological practice, and a critical review of the quality of the current evidence for each commonly used modality. CAM comprises a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not currently considered part of conventional medicine (P. M. Barnes, Powell-Griner, McFann, & Nahin, 2004). Defining CAM can be challenging because the field is broad and perpetually evolving; it includes diverse practices such as yoga, mindfulness meditation, acupuncture, and herbal therapies, as well as whole systems approaches such as traditional Chinese medicine. Furthermore, a distinction can be made between complementary medicine and alternative medicine. The National Institutes of Health's (NIH) National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) defines complementary medicine as interventions used together with conventional treatment regimens, whereas alternative medicine consists of interventions that are used in place of conventional medical practice (NIH, 2011h)."--Introduction.
