Vom 30. Mai bis zum 1. Juni 2008 veranstalteten die Gewerkschaft ver.di, der Deutsche Schriftstellerverband sowie gewerkschaftliche Gremien in Berlin im ver.di Bildungs- und Begegnungszentrum Clara Sahlberg eine Konferenz zum 70. Todestag des Bildhauers und Schriftstellers Ernst Barlach (geboren 1870 in Wedel an der Elbe, gestorben 1938 in Rostock); sie stand unter einem Motto von Barlach: Wider den Ungeist der Zeit. Barlach war in seiner Epoche in Deutschland der einzige Avantgardist, der ein genuines doppeltes Künstlertum bewies. Er betätigte sich sowohl auf dem Gebiet der bildenden Künste (Bildhauer, Graphiker, Zeichner, Illustrator) als auch auf dem literarischen (Tagebuch, Autobiographie, Briefe, Dramen, Romane, Kurzprosa, Essays). Berühmt wurde er u. a. durch seine Kriegsdenkmäler, von denen jedes ein Aufruf zum Frieden ist. In ihren Vorträgen gingen die Referentinnen und Referenten auf die verschiedenen Aspekte seines Lebens, seines Schaffens und auf die Verfolgung während des Jahrfünfts von 1933-1938 ein.
