Jahrhundert wurde die Insel zum Ausgangspunkt für eine Genossenschaft von Kaufleuten, die gemeinsam nach Novgorod fuhren. So ist Gotland nicht nur ein Zentrum des Austauschs innerhalb des Ostseeraums, sondern darüber hinaus für das gesamte Gebiet des Hansehandels.
