Die verschiedenen Entwicklungsstadien des Staates werden aufgrund der Typenlehre Max Webers, des wohl bekanntesten soziologischen "Klassikers", eingehend dargestellt. Hierbei werden nicht nur die geschichtlichen Fakten, sondern auch die wissenschaftlichen Kontroversen allgemeinverständlich behandelt, wobei besonderes Augenmerk jeweils auf Organisation und Legitimität gelegt wird. Die Studie reicht bis zu den gegenwärtigen Entwicklungstendenzen, die anhand der neuesten Literatur dargestellt werden. Der Autor bietet eine breit gespannte, verständlich geschriebene Synthese von Soziologie, Geschichte und Politologie. Leider ist zu vermuten, daß dies bei vielen Lesern nicht auf Interesse stößt, weil sie entweder geschichtliche Abhandlungen oder aktuelle Fragestellungen bevorzugen.
