Untersucht wird die Entstehungsgeschichte einer »Jammerruf des Toten« genannten Textgruppe: Die Rede eines aus der Hölle sprechenden Toten ermahnt die Lebenden, ihr Leben zu ändern, um der eigenen Verdammnis zu entgehen. Die höllischen Qualen, die der Sprecher erleidet, werden ebenso drastisch geschildert wie die falschen Versprechungen (ewige Jugend, Schönheit, Reichtum), denen er erlag. Ausgehend von den zugrundeliegenden Hymnen »Lessus damnati« und »Planctus animae damnatae« wird deren Übersetzung und Bearbeitung vorgestellt und verglichen. Der Text impliziert eine Abbildung, die einige Handschriften tatsächlich aufweisen, während andere nur beschreiben, wie eine Illustration auszusehen hätte und weitere Handschriften lediglich freien Raum hierfür lassen. Von den beiden Hymnen und den insgesamt sieben mittelhoch- und niederdeutschen Versionen werden textkritische Editionen vorgelegt, ihre jeweilige Überlieferungsgeschichte untersucht und dargestellt, wie der allen gemeinsame Ausgangspunkt im Laufe der Entwicklung erweitert, umgestaltet und variiert wird.
