Mit 72 Gemälden und 25 Arbeiten auf Papier wird C. Pissarro (1830-1903) derzeit in einer großen Ausstellung in der Staatsgalerie Stuttgart vorgestellt. Dies ist die 1. umfassende Monographie in deutscher Sprache. In der einleitenden Biografie werden seine Werke mit solchen seiner Zeitgenossen verglichen, und es wird ferner gezeigt, wie lange er um Anerkennung kämpfen musste. Eingeteilt in Dezennien werden seine Arbeitsweise und seine Motive von der Schilderung der Natur zu seinen späteren Städtebildern, von der impressionistischen Bewegung zu seiner vorübergehenden farbzerlegenden Malweise der Pointillisten dargelegt. Es wird gezeigt, wie er ständig seine künstlerischen Ausdrucksformen in Frage stellte und verbesserte. Den Arbeiten auf Papier ist ein eigenes Kapitel gewidmet. Pissarro ist sicher nicht der Erfinder beziehungsweise der "Vater" des Impressionismus, ist aber ein wichtiger Vermittler zwischen C. Corot und C. Monet gewesen.
