1863 wird in Leverkusen, 20 Kilometer rheinabwärts von Köln, die Bayer AG gegründet. 2013 stellt Bayer, wie seit der Firmengründung vor 150 Jahren, chemische und pharmazeutische Produkte her. In über 300 zum Bayer-Konzern gehörenden Gesellschaften sind rund 100.000 Mitarbeiter beschäftigt. Bereits Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts begann der damalige Generaldirektor Carl Duisburg damit, eine Kunstsammlung aufzubauen. Der Konzern verstand dies als Bildungsmaßnahme für seine Mitarbeiter: Jeder sollte sich, wenn er wollte, ein Bild für sein Büro aussuchen können. Und so wurde gesammelt. 2.000 Kunstwerke zählt die Firmensammlung heute. Anlässlich des 150-jährigen Bestehens der Bayer AG zeigt der Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin rund 250 Arbeiten der Sammlung. Gesammelt wurde nicht systematisch nach einem Schwerpunkt. Es lassen sich aber fünf Bereiche ausmachen: Max Beckmann, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner und Emil Nolde etwa repräsentieren den deutschen Expressionismus. Georges Braque, Marc Chagall und Pablo Picasso stehen für die Pariser Kunstszene der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Als Schlüsselfigur des Informel des Nachkriegsdeutschlands ist Ernst Wilhelm Nay zu nennen. Die US-amerikanische Westküste ist mit Ed Ruscha, David Hockney und Sam Francis vertreten. Und schließlich dürfen auch deutsche zeitgenössische Künstler wie Gerhard Richter und Albert Oehlen nicht fehlen
